Getting Active & Healthy @ Grow ELC Killarney Vale

As an educational centre that prides ourselves on providing high quality education and care, each year we prepare and implement a week-long event called ACTIVATHON! This is a week where we focus our learning and education towards living a healthy lifestyle and how being active keeps us healthy and strong.

This year, the children went through a mini activity marathon during our outside morning play time. There were multiple stations set up in the yard where we grouped the children into small groups with an educator, and the children spent 5 minutes at each station before rotating to the next. Every day had a different program from the event with different activities set up.

For example, we had a dolly dancing where the children had to copy the doll’s actions. If the doll moved its right leg up, the children had to copy the doll. If the doll ran around the chair or sat on the chair, the children had to copy it. They absolutely loved it! We also did egg and spoon races, obstacle courses, bean bag toss, long jump, sensory parachutes and ball games. All these activities help build the children’s confidence in their own body’s coordination and balance. They also develop the children’s fundamental movement skills and encourages their social interactions whilst having fun in their groups.

Our educational group times revolved around teaching the children about healthy eating and personal hygiene, like bathing and brushing teeth. It truly was a great week and the children had a blast!

Following this week, the children participated in an awards ceremony each day where they each received (and watched their peers receive) a certificate for participating in our Activathon and a prize! Our prizes consisted of active toys to get them out and active in their yards at home.

Finally, we recently introduced a staff member of the month to show our educators our appreciation for their hard work and dedication to the centre. For October, our staff member of the month was Miss Amanda, our Little Explorers Room Leader. Amanda has stepped into the role of room leader while our original leader is on maternity leave. The role is new to her, and she is learning a lot about guiding and educating the team. This month, we have seen Miss Amanda do extremely well in guiding her team, providing an education program full of fun activities for our children, and go above and beyond with her dedication and time for the centre. We are proud of you Amanda! Continue doing well!
